Preconditioning Before an IP Test: The Step Everyone Skips

An IP test is only meaningful if the sample is in the condition it will be in service. Laboratories that test a bare enclosure without cable entries produce results that cannot be reproduced in the field.

Fit the accessories

Install cable glands with cable of the specified diameter, fit blanking plugs in unused entries, and mount the unit with its normal brackets. Any opening that will exist in service must exist in the test.

Temperature preconditioning

Many product standards require thermal cycling before the water test, to simulate expansion and contraction of seals. Where the generic standard is silent, a sensible protocol is to stabilise the sample at the upper operating temperature, then test immediately, which is harsher than testing at room temperature.

Functional check afterwards

The pass criterion is not only "no water inside" but "no harmful effect". Operate the device after the test: switches, displays, connectors. Water that has entered a connector housing may not reach the electronics immediately but will cause corrosion within weeks, so inspect connector cavities as well as the main enclosure.
