IEC 60529 defines the IP code and the generic test methods. Most products, however, are tested to a product standard that references it with modifications, and the modifications take precedence.
IEC 60598 for luminaires adds specific orientations and durations. IEC 60079 for explosive atmospheres adds dust layer and thermal requirements. IEC 60950 and its successor IEC 62368 for IT equipment define which parts must remain accessible after the test. Automotive customers often require DIN 40050-9 IPX9K alongside the IEC levels.
A product that passes the generic IPX4 test may fail the product standard version because the sample must be tested in a different orientation, or because the acceptance criterion is stricter. Certification bodies test to the product standard, so a generic report may not be accepted.
Start from the product standard, follow its references into IEC 60529, and record both in the report. If the product standard is silent, the generic method applies, and that should be stated explicitly so the reader knows why no modification was made.
